Deleting Your Data

Last Updated: August 13, 2026

Markit gives you two ways to remove your data. You can delete individual things — a place, a product, a photo, your saved favorites — and keep using your account. Or you can delete your account entirely, which permanently destroys everything you created. This page explains both, step by step, and lists exactly what is deleted, what is kept, and for how long.

1. Delete Specific Data (Keep Your Account)

You do not have to close your account to remove your data. Every item below can be deleted on its own, from any platform — the iPhone app, the Android app, or the web map at markitplace.org/map. Deletions apply everywhere immediately, because all three apps share one account.

  • A place you added: Open the place, tap Edit, then use the red delete control. Deleting a place also removes its inventory, its photos, and its listings from search results.
  • A product you created: Open the product and choose Edit Product → Delete product. This removes the product and its photo everywhere it was listed.
  • A single photo: In the place or product editor, tap the × on any photo, then save.
  • Your saved favorites: Tap the heart on any place or product to remove it from My Favorites.
  • Your notifications: Open Notifications and swipe a single item away, or choose Clear All.
  • Your Square connection: Go to Edit Profile → Business → Disconnect Square. This revokes our access to your Square account and deletes the stored authorization.
  • Your contact details and address: Clear the fields in Edit Profile and save. Turning your profile off "public" also removes your contact details from the copy other users can see.
  • Your saved business location: Clear it in Edit Profile → Business. On mobile you can also revoke location access entirely in your device settings.
  • Buyer contact sharing: Turn off Ordering consent in Edit Profile so your name, email, and phone are no longer passed to sellers when you place an order.

2. Delete Your Account and All Your Data

Deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone. You can do it yourself, from any platform, without contacting us.

Delete your account on the web: markitplace.org/map?account=delete

Sign in when prompted and the Account tab opens directly on the deletion control.

On the web

  1. Go to markitplace.org/map and sign in.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top corner of the map.
  3. Choose Edit Profile.
  4. Open the Account tab.
  5. Under Danger zone, click Delete Account.
  6. Read the warning and click Delete Everything.
  7. Confirm it's you — enter your password, or confirm with Google or Apple if that's how you sign in — then click Confirm Deletion.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Markit app and tap your profile picture on the map screen.
  2. Tap Edit Profile.
  3. Open the Account tab.
  4. Tap Delete Account, then Delete Everything.
  5. Confirm with your password, Google, or Apple to finish.

On Android

  1. Open the Markit app and tap your profile picture on the map screen.
  2. Tap Edit Profile.
  3. Open the Account tab.
  4. Under Danger Zone, tap Delete Account and confirm.
  5. Confirm with your password or your Google account to finish.

For your security, we ask you to sign in again before deleting. If you see a message asking you to confirm your sign-in, just repeat the final step — your session was simply too old.

3. What Gets Deleted

Deleting your account destroys the following, permanently:

  • Your account and sign-in credentials — you will no longer be able to sign in with that email, Google account, or Apple ID.
  • Your profile — display name, business name, bio, brand color, avatar, social links, and settings.
  • Your private information — address, phone number, contact email, saved business location, notification token, and consent preferences.
  • Every place you created, including its inventory, hours, keywords, and photos.
  • Every product you created, including its photos, and its listings at any other seller's location.
  • All of your uploaded images — avatar, product photos, and place photos are erased from storage.
  • Your favorites, and your saved places and products.
  • Your notification history.
  • Your Square connection — the stored authorization is deleted and our access to your Square account is revoked automatically.
  • Your subscription record (see Section 5 about cancelling billing first).

Reports you filed about other users are closed rather than kept open, since we can no longer follow up with you about them.

4. What We Keep, and Why

A small amount of information survives account deletion, because we're legally or operationally required to keep it. None of it identifies you by name or contact details.

  • Order records. If you bought something through Markit, the seller keeps the record of that sale for their own tax and accounting obligations, and for handling refunds or disputes. We remove your name, email, and phone number from those records at the moment you delete your account — the buyer is shown only as "Deleted user." Order records are retained for seven years, then deleted.
  • Payment records held by Square. Payments are processed by Square, not by Markit — we never receive or store your card details. Square keeps its own transaction records under its own retention policy, which we cannot delete on your behalf. Contact Square directly about data they hold.
  • Moderation records. If your content was reported and actioned, we keep the moderation record so the same content cannot simply be re-posted. These records are retained for safety purposes only.
  • Anonymous, aggregated analytics. Counts of searches, views, and taps that were already aggregated into statistics cannot be traced back to you and are not deleted. They contain no personal information.
  • Security and server logs. Routine logs are retained briefly for fraud prevention and troubleshooting, then automatically expire.

Timing. Deletion begins the moment you confirm and typically finishes within a few minutes. Your account and content disappear from Markit immediately. Residual copies inside our hosting provider's encrypted backups are overwritten on their normal cycle and are fully purged within 30 days.

5. Before You Delete

  • Cancel an Apple subscription yourself. If you subscribed to Markit Pro through the iPhone app, deleting your Markit account does not cancel your Apple subscription — only Apple can do that. Cancel it at Manage Subscriptions in your Apple account before you delete, or you will keep being billed.
  • Google Play and web subscriptions stop automatically. If you subscribed through Google Play or on the web, we schedule the cancellation for you — you keep access through the end of the period you already paid for, and are not billed again.
  • Tell your buyers first. Deleting your account removes your places from the map immediately, including any orders buyers were waiting to pick up.
  • Save anything you want to keep. Your photos and listings cannot be recovered after deletion, by you or by us.

6. If You Can't Sign In

Deleting your account requires signing in, because that is how we confirm the request is really yours. If you've lost access to your account, email us at team@markitplace.org from the address associated with the account, and we will verify your identity and delete it for you. We aim to respond within 30 days.
